The Red Bull Amaphiko Academy 2017 gives social entrepreneurs wings
The Amaphiko Academy, established in 2014, grew out of Red Bull’s ongoing mission to identify and develop talent. Amaphiko (Zulu for “wings”) was launched to “give wings” to grassroots social entrepreneurs who are making a positive difference in their communities, and to inspire a broad audience to do the same.
The Red Bull Amaphiko Academy took place in South Africa from 19–28 May 2017. 16 of South Africa’s brightest social entrepreneurs came together in Mamelodi, Pretoria, for a 10-day residential programme of mentorship, inspiration and practical skills training. They will continue working over the next 18 months with their mentors one-on-one, to further develop business and personal strategies for the plans that they will bring to life. Publicis Machine’s goal was to encourage the people of Mamelodi to attend the public workshops (sport, culture & business workshops) and to attend and partake in the Social Innovation Festival. To do this we began with designing the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy visual identity and then rolled out a range of diverse campaign assets, including a key visual, event handbook and tons of other event collateral.
One member of the Publicis Machine team in particular pulled out all the stops with her dedication to the project. After spending four months on the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy, bright young designer Jodia Steenkamp was personally recognised for her hard work and long hours when she was asked to not only attend the event, but be part of it too. Jodia is attending the event as a guest digital designer, available to connect with and guide academy participants and show them the power that visual communications could have on their projects.
Not only is this a fantastic reward for hard work, but an incredible achievement, well done Jodia.
